How to add a widget to the left sidebar..

Hi, we have focus 1.0.8, I\’d like to know how I can add various widgets to utilize the blank space in the leftmost sidebar (just under the post author name, tags, etc)… this area marked here:

specifically we want to add this zooming widget…

Does this require a theme customization?
