DominicAt the moment, you can definitely use the image.gif in the Gallery posts as well as in the post content. You want to use the image.gif, you can do as the following:
+ Log in to Dashboard > Posts> Add new, click the “Add Media ” button.
– if you want to upload images into the post, after clicking on “Add Media” button, on the left hand side, click on ” Insert Media” link and then select your image.gif . After that, click Insert into post button.
– To create a Gallery, you can hit the Create Gallery link, select your image.gif then click Create a new gallery > Insert Gallery and select the Gallery format in the Format feature on the right hand side. Notice: You can use the image.gif to set the Featured image.

When I set it as Featured image, it doesn't work…
Dominicyou can tell me detail about the position which you want to add a animated gif in the Home page area
