spacing on thumbnails

In the preview for an image format post (that has photo attachments), and on the single post page displaying a gallery of images, the thumbnails have quite a lot of horizontal space between them. Is it possible to reduce this space?

I sense it has something to do with the "gallery-item" code, but I can’t figure out what to do.
