I copied over the template files for editing, but where and how should I edit the widget code?

At the moment, you only can find the widgets file in the wp-content -> plugins -> dw-question-answer -> inc -> widgets folder, you can not edit widgets from template file.
wp-content -> plugins -> dw-question-answer -> inc -> widgets
