Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_blogs_record_activity()

I get the following error when posting a question. I followed the instructions for buddypress integration and everything else works except for this (question gets posted but activity stream is not updated). My /buddypress/bp-custom.php doesn’t see the /plugins/buddypress/bp-blogs/bp_blogs_activity.php file or it can’t find the function.
Do I need to include the buddypress plugin or should it already know where it is. I’m on WP 3.9.1 and tried several themes including twentytwelve..
