Why does Twitter not shorten the URL?

Here is a Post on my DW-Focus site:

When I use the social media TWITTER button on the left hand (under Sharing), it produces:

Technical Spotlight – Antibodies to cannabinoid type 1 receptor co-react with stomatin-like protein 2 in mouse brain mitochondria http://www.ejnblog.org/newsite/2013/08/06/technical-spotlight-antibodies-to-cannabinoid-type-1-receptor-co-react-with-stomatin-like-protein-2-in-mouse-brain-mitochondria/

This is -18 characters long.

How do I overcome this? PLEASE HELP!

I am pretty sure this is not bug and you can go to Twitter site for further checking. To resolve this problem, you can use bitly to share as you wish.
